High Plains

This holiday takes you to the Cère valley on the edge of the spectacular Monts du Cantal. Explore the old spa town of Vic sur Cère and visit historic Mur Le Barrez. On a warm summers day in Auvergne, as you cycle across the plateau, you can see for miles. Hear the buzzards and kites call out as they glide on the currents of warm air.

Day 1: Arrive at St Flour
On arrival at the railway station, you will be met by our representative who will take you to our base hotel. You stay in the centre of St Flour, perfect for exploring the narrow lanes of this charming town.

Day 2: St Flour - Neuvéglise
27 kms
An excellent cycling route, on tracks and small roads through varied countryside. The dolmen (ancient standing stones) and stone crosses signposted along the way make a welcome diversion for a short rest.
Day 3: Neuvéglise
You might take a day trip to the Chateau d’Alleuze or, alternatively, cycle to the lake at Lanau along some “top ten” cycling roads. The energetic might want to go on to the historic town of Chaudes Aigues.

Day 4: Neuvéglise - Pont La Vielle
37 kms
Take a packed lunch today to eat on your journey across the plateau through small villages and hamlets. Stop at Brezons to see the old church. Throughout the day there are magnificent views of the Monts du Cantal in the distance.

Day 5: Pont La Vielle
A day trip to the charming small town of Mur Le Barrez is an excellent way to spend your day. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from as you wander around the narrow lanes of this ancient town.

Day 6: Pont La Vielle - Vic sur Cère
32 kms
A trip along some very pretty lanes from the plateau across to the borders of the Monts du Cantal. Perhaps stop in Pailherols for a mid-morning drink and a look in the church opposite the bar. After lunch there are some cool shady roads through woods to Vic sur Cère.

Day 7: Vic sur Cère
Plenty of choice for your “day off” today. You might walk to the Rocher des Pendus and have lunch at the nearby restaurant. Alternatively, visit Aurillac, the capital of Cantal by bike or by train, or relax by the hotel’s pool.

Day 8: Vic sur Cère - St Flour
37 kms
In the morning, cycle to the impressive Chateau de Pesteils before catching a train to Neussargues, from where it is a short cycle back to St Flour.

Day 9: Leave for Home
After breakfast, our representative will take you to the railway station for your journey home.
