Plateaux & Gorges

A holiday set on the high plateaux, deep valleys and gorges of the Truyère. Enjoy the climb from the blue lakes to the plateaux where you are on top of the world. Follow the contours of the landscape for spectacular views and excellent cycling. Visit the typical small town of Chaudes Aigues with its bars and restaurants and its famous hot spring.

Day 1: Arrive at St Flour
On arrival at the railway station, you will be met by our representative who will take you to our base hotel. You stay in the centre of St Flour haute perfect for exploring the narrow lanes of this charming town.

Day 2: St Flour - Neuvéglise
27 kms
A lovely day's cycle on quite roads and tracks through woods, farmland and unspoilt countryside. Stop along the way to wonder about the builders of the dolmen (ancient standing stones) to be found signposted just off the road.

Day 3: Neuvéglise
A typical small French town. A day trip to the ruined Chateau d’Alleuze by the blue waters of the lake created by the hydro-electric dam at Grandval.

Day 4: Neuvéglise - Chaudes Aigues
27 kms
Some "top ten" cycling roads today, with great views over the lake. There are one or two hills to climb but they are soon conquered and well worth the effort for the freewheel across the plateau on the other side.

Day 5: Chaudes Aigues
A small town with its own unique character. Chaudes Aigues’ claim to fame is the hot water spring that emerges in the centre of town. At 82° centigrade, it is nearly hot enough to make a cup of tea.

Day 6: Chaudes Aigues - Garabit
39 kms
Good cycling terrain. Perhaps take a lunch stop at Faverolles before a tour around the Chateau de Chassan. Arrive in Garabit for your unforgettable first view of the huge viaduct built by Gustave Eiffel before he built the Eiffel Tower and every bit as impressive.

Day 7: Garabit
Plenty of choice for a day trip on your bicycle or a relaxing boat trip on the lake. Or perhaps just enjoy a rest by the hotel’s swimming pool.

Day 8: Garabit - St Flour
20 kms
Cycle on small roads and woodland tracks on the last full day of your holiday. Pause by the river in St Flour bas, then continue through the old town to your base hotel.

Day 9: Leave for Home
After breakfast, our representative will take you to Neussargues railway station for your journey home.
