Monts du Cantal

The Monts du Cantal, the oldest and the most dramatic of Auvergne's mountain ranges, are the perfect setting for a walking holiday. The landscape of rocky peaks, sharp ridges and green valleys can only be reached on foot. The walks follow ridges, ancient paths and waymarked footpaths through a mixed terrain of woodland, pasture and heath. The springy grass of the pasture gives way to stony tracks at higher altitude.

Day 1: Arrive at Vic sur Cère
On arriving at Vic sur Cère station, you will be met by our representative who will take you to our base hotel. The following morning, after breakfast, our representative will brief you with detailed route notes and up to date reports on local conditions.

Day 2: Vic sur Cère - Mandailles St Julien
16 kms
From the Cère valley you climb to the Col du Berganty for the first spectacular views of your holiday. A day of passes and ridges in pasture and heathland with a chance to stop and rest in St Julien before you reach your hotel.

Day 3: Mandailles St Julien
We propose an excellent circular walk through meadows and woodlands to the unmissable Puy Mary (1,783m). Returning on a ridge path via the Puy Chavaroche you have spectacular views to both sides.

Day 4: Mandailles St Julien - St Jacques des Blats
17 kms
A varied day’s walk to the small village of St Jacques des Blats. There are no steep climbs except the final 200m to the summit of the Puy Griou. A shorter alternative is available but we recommend doing the whole walk for a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Day 5: St Jacques des Blats
If you don’t want a rest on your rest day, you can hike up the Plomb du Cantal, the highest peak of the region. The day’s climb starts in woodland and then continues in pasture and along ridges to the summit. The afternoon is a gentle descent through pleasant countryside back to your hotel.

Day 6: St Jacques des Blats - Vic sur Cère
16 kms
An easy walk along the valley floor, when another climb might just be one too many. After lunch in Thiézac spend a pleasant afternoon following the Cère river as it meanders to Vic sur Cère.

Day 7: Leave for Home
After breakfast, our representative will take you to the railway station for your journey home.
