Jura Trailblazer 10

A grand tour through some of the most beautiful parts of Jura. A holiday for cyclists who want to cover slightly longer distances and aren’t afraid of a little hilly terrain. Based on our eight-night holiday with an additional two nights in a very comfortable hotel at Passenans to visit Baume les Messieurs and Château Chalon, two of the prettiest villages in France.

Day 1: Arrive at Champagnole
You will be met at the railway station by our representative who will take you to our base hotel.

Day 2: Champagnole – Malbuisson
52 kms
As soon as you leave town you are in very pretty countryside: gently undulating terrain through woods and farmland, past small villages, rivers and waterfalls.
Day 3: Malbuisson
Our excellent hotel, on the banks of Lac St Point, is a picturesque spot to spend the day relaxing. The roads around the lake are very popular with local cyclists as training routes, being well surfaced and as challenging as you want to make them. Further afield, visit the imposing Château de Joux; or cycle to Metabief for a trip in a cable car and walk to the summit of the Mont d’Or.

Day 4: Malbuisson – Bonnevaux le Prieuré
58 kms
A longer day’s cycle with some stunning downhill stretches. Visit the source of the Loue River where it gushes from the base of a towering cliff. Then freewheel alongside the gorge to Mouthier Haute-Pierre and Lods, beautiful and unusual farming villages in the Loue valley.

Day 5: Bonnevaux le Prieuré
The hotel is a converted water mill in a tranquil green valley. Follow the chef’s suggestions in the exceptional restaurant for an unforgettable gourmet experience.
Cycle to historic Besançon and its 17th century Citadel.

Day 6: Bonnevaux le Prieuré – Salins les Bains
50 kms
Start the day with a visit to the picture postcard town of Ornans. Then on past the château at Cléron through tiny villages along small roads in rural undulating countryside to Salins les Bains.

Day 7: Salins les Bains
Cycle to the pretty villages on the Loue River and Arc-et-Senans, then continue to Quingey through very pretty countryside back to Salins.

Day 8: Salins les Bains – Passenans
38 kms
Not a long cycle today. Stop for a tasting in the wine shops of Arbois before tackling the hill to Pupillin. After lunch at the Auberge, continue on uphill to the medieval town of Poligny, famous for its Comté cheese.

Day 9: Passenans
A day trip to see two of the prettiest villages in France. First, visit Baume les Messieurs then continue on to Château Chalon in its imposing setting on a rocky spur with commanding views over the surrounding countryside.

Day 10: Passenans – Champagnole
58 kms
Cycle to the viewpoint at the top of the falls above the Cascades du Hérrison to walk the footpath between the waterfalls and perhaps have lunch at the Auberge. Then cycle on through forest and small villages on excellent cycling roads back to your base hotel.

Day 11: Leave for Home
After breakfast, our representative will take you to the railway station for your journey home.
