Walking and Cycling in France

We offer holidays in three regions of France where we have searched out some really great cycling and walking. Above all else, we have designed these holidays to be fun. They also give a sense of achievement and discovery and, not least, an appetite for a great meal at the end of each day. Each part of each holiday has been carefully thought out by experienced walkers and cyclists to include the best of walking and cycling available anywhere.

Last year France was just about perfect for walkers and cyclists, you had to be unlucky to catch a bad spell. We are looking forward to 2006, hoping for more fine summer weather.
We have holidays to suit all tastes: from gentle cycles and easy rambles for the occasional cyclist or walker, up to "Trailblazer" cycling holidays for those who like to cover longer distances and perhaps bring their own bicycle. Adventurous walkers can try our Monts du Cantal 8 night holiday.
In 2006 we continue to refine and improve our holidays. Route notes are revised and double checked and some hotel stops have been upgraded from 2* to 3* to ensure the best possible from your Boots & Bikes holiday.
Choose from Auvergne, the ancient heart of France where time has stood still; Burgundy's vineyards and abbeys or the wide open spaces of the high Massif of Jura stretching across to Switzerland.

Our holidays are unique

You won’t find anyone else offering the same holidays. We research the best routes, based upon our detailed knowledge of the area, and we provide detailed notes to guide you through each day. The holiday notes also suggest ideas for exploring your holiday region on days when you are not moving on between hotels.

It’s all taken care of

On a Boots & Bikes holiday, we do all the work. We leave you free to enjoy your holiday without a care. We book hotels, flights and train tickets and move your luggage from hotel to hotel. There is always a Boots & Bikes representative nearby to provide local support should you need any help.

Cycling holidays in France

We offer unique independent cycling holidays. We lend you a bike specially suited to the quiet country roads, towpaths and tracks that you may encounter. We do not use very rough or difficult tracks; this is a holiday, not the Tour de France or a mountain bike race. We provide hybrid bicycles that are comfortable and easy to ride for keen and occasional cyclists alike. Your bicycle will be cleaned and serviced ready for you to use. The bikes are well equipped and all have panniers big enough to carry your essentials for a day out in the countryside.

Walking holidays in France

Our walking holidays are independent and supported by detailed route notes. We know that the best walks include a variety of terrain and changing views. Some routes follow the Grande Randonnées that cross France and are well sign-posted and often surprisingly little used. In general, we avoid walking on roads but inevitably there is some roadwork on quiet roads to link up footpaths and to visit small towns and villages. The walks are suitable for any reasonably fit person and often a choice of route is offered to suit different abilities and tastes. There are no sharp drop-offs and no scrambling. We have graded the holidays in terms of the physical effort involved so that you can choose the holiday that will suit you.

Choosing a Boots & Bikes holiday

This website contains full details of how to choose the Boots & Bikes holiday to suit you. There are separate pages for walking and cycling holidays in each holiday region. Each holiday is described as accurately as possible and summarised in a “Quick Facts” panel for easy reference.

Details of how to book, prices, travel details, our terms and conditions and a booking form are all included within this website.

The Tour

Usually, the holidays start and finish at the same hotel and you complete a tour of the region moving from hotel to hotel. In general you move on to a new hotel every second day. This gives the holiday a natural rhythm; one day you move on, the next day you stay put and rest or take an excursion to explore the features of the area. The hotels are chosen for their individual merits and all welcome walkers and cyclists. We avoid very grand hotels where a tired and dusty client might feel uncomfortable on arrival. Each of our hotels are very different but all of our hoteliers will be pleased to see you.
