Auvergne
Our
holidays are based in Cantal, the most southerly department
of Auvergne. The traditional houses are built from dark volcanic
stone with stone roofs weighing many tons.

more about Auvergne
On the
hillsides you will see the burons, (stone shelters) used for
centuries to shelter the people and their animals. The shaggy
brown cattle with their fearsome looking horns fit perfectly
into this ancient landscape.

Walkers can choose between 2 very different regions in the
Auvergne.
The peaks of the Monts du Cantal are suitable for keen
or occasional walkers. Choose the length and difficulty of
your walks to the peaks. Each day's walk is along well way-marked
paths, often following Grandee Randonnées, the long
distance paths that cross France. The two highest peaks are
included on your itinerary for spectacular views from the
summits.
Alternatively walk the Margaride's Rivers and Valleys,
with gently rolling pine-clad hills alongside the banks of
the Truyère river. This sparsely populated region is
home to a wide variety of wildlife that finds its home in
this beautiful area.
The Viaduct at Garabit comes into view to leave a lasting
impression. The single track railway across the top is still
in use today, 120 years since the viaduct was built by Gustave
Eiffel.
